Velocity Transport is proud to say that our people are our greatest asset. To show off the individuals responsible for our winning culture, we’ll be sharing an employee spotlight on a near-monthly basis. To kick things off, we’re interviewing Dakota Temple, a carrier sales representative whose willingness to always go the extra mile has propelled him to success during his tenure with Velocity.
Dakota is a graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas and a US Army Veteran, one of many veterans on staff at Velocity. He’s our top-ranked carrier sales rep and you’ll never see him without a Red Bull in his hand. We’re starting to think those two facts are related!
Without further ado, we’d like you to meet Dakota Temple:
How long have you been with Velocity Transport?
I’m excited to say I’ve just passed my one-year anniversary with Velocity! (Dakota joined our team in November 2018)
How did you find out about Velocity and what made you want to join?
Well, I was initially interested in the transportation industry in general. It’s such a huge and vital industry, and I knew there was a lot of growth potential there. With Velocity specifically, I found them through LinkedIn and was immediately drawn to the start-up atmosphere. I knew I’d be able to be a part of growth if I joined.
What does the day-to-day life of a carrier sales representative look like?
It’s multifaceted. I start by checking in on loads in transit and call my drivers to make sure everything’s running smoothly. After I address any hiccups, I start sourcing trucks and negotiating rates. Rate negotiation is my favorite part of the job because it has to most to do with our success and is the best barometer for my personal performance.
What do you enjoy most about working for Velocity?
Being able to see that my hard work makes a difference. On top of that, it’s the entrepreneurial culture. I don’t have anyone sitting on my shoulder each day. I get to do what I want to do, I’m super focused on my individual performance. In addition to that aspect of culture, I also love that we’re a close family, and all the company gatherings and outings that go along with that.
What aspect of your job brings you the most pride or gratification?
Definitely being able to see my performance and progress on a day-to-day basis. I’m competitive, so I really enjoy the friendly competitions and contests.
What core value means the most to you and why?
Relentless Service. We mean business and want to provide unmatched service to our customers!
What drives you to go the extra mile?
My reputation and wanting to do my job the best I can. That’s hard to answer because going the extra mile feels like a no-brainer. If I’m given an opportunity, I’m never going to pass it up. I’m going to give it my all.
How would you pitch Velocity to someone considering joining the team?
You’re joining an exciting company, but you’re building your own book of business. You manage what you work on and no one is micromanaging you, although you do have the support of leadership. The pay is great, the benefits are great, you just have to be willing to put the work in and you HAVE to have an entrepreneurial mindset.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love working on cars, riding my motorcycle, and going to the gym. If I have enough energy left! I also have a passion for volunteer work, especially with veterans. Whether it’s giving time or money, I believe volunteering is extremely valuable. Recently, I’ve also been able to organize some volunteer initiatives with my team here at Velocity.
