As Velocity Transport and others across all industries navigate the complex problem of moving forward during a pandemic, our team has stepped up to address this challenge. The talented individuals that make up the Velocity Transport team are staying steady as we all adjust to a new normal, so we are going to stay the course and keep celebrating our amazing people!
This month, we’re shining a spotlight on a member of our carrier sales team with a heart for service. Meet Tavarren Wade, aka T-Wade, a tenacious carrier sales rep who leaped at the chance to join a team where he could leave his imprint on our company culture.
Hear Tavarren’s story and see what he has to say about Velocity:
How long have you been with Velocity Transport?
I’ve been here for just over two years, which on a young team like ours makes me a little bit of a veteran. The culture is what’s kept me here, that balance of an entrepreneurial atmosphere mixed with great team spirit.
How did you find out about Velocity and what made you want to join?
I actually had a friend who worked here and he would not stop talking to me about how amazing it was. He knew I had a little bit of experience working with carriers, and he kept telling me I’d have the chance to help invent the culture, which was really appealing to me.
Can you talk to us about going back to school while working at Velocity?
After being on the team for 7 months, I expressed the desire to go back to school. Leadership was incredibly supportive of me and helped me out in a huge way.
They worked with me on school projects and made themselves available for interviews. They just really support you here, and I’m also proud to say that my sales numbers didn’t slip at all while I was in school!
How do you structure your daily responsibilities as a carrier sales rep?
I’m really routine-oriented, but I love freedom. And Velocity gives you the opportunity to create the routines that work for you, which is my ideal situation. First thing, I protect the loads I’ve got booked, making sure drivers are on top of everything. After that, I check back in with drivers and customer reps. And after noon, I’m just dialing and dialing and dialing.
I love negotiating, so I try to spend most of the afternoon doing that work.
How does working with carriers differ from working with customers?
I would say it’s the consistent, relentless communication. To have happy customers and happy carriers, you have to have great service, and over-communication is a key part of that.
Relentless communication is key on the customer side too, but I feel like it’s especially important for carrier sales reps.
What do you enjoy most about working for Velocity?
It’s absolutely the culture. Managers allow you to handle business the way you want to. They never hover or micromanage, but they do support you constantly. As long as we get it done and live up to the core values, we’re good. I love that freedom.
What core value means the most to you and why?
Integrity First. We have to uphold our end of the bargain to whoever we’re speaking to. You shouldn’t need all eyes on you to do the right thing. If you have integrity, you’ll succeed here.
How would you pitch Velocity to someone considering joining the team?
If you want to work in a great environment, where they teach you all aspects of the industry, where you’re never confused, where the energy is high and you can see your efforts pay off, if you want to give relentless service, Velocity is where you want to be.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love volunteering. I coach little league basketball and football in low-income communities. It brings me so much pride and joy to see the kids grow and succeed, both on and off the court.
Outside of that, I love planning events. Bachelor parties, engagement parties, baby showers, social events, you name it.
