Our latest Team Member Spotlight showcases a hard-working customer sales representative who has proven that she can thrive in the office, working from home, and everywhere in between! We’re excited to introduce you to Susan Bailey, a member of our team with a passion for uncovering the best way to serve each customer.
In this interview, we discuss what Susan loves about working with so many different customer personalities as well as how she’s adjusted to working from home and how she continues to maintain a healthy work/life balance.
How long have you been with Velocity Transport and what brought you to the team?
I’ve been on the Velocity team for just over a year now! Prior to Velocity, I was working in logistics elsewhere and also have operated some of my own businesses.
What brought me to the team was them finding me! I had my résumé on LinkedIn and they reached out. The team size and family atmosphere were really attractive to me, and even though my experience wasn’t a 1-for-1 match for Velocity, they saw potential in me and gave me a clear path for growth. From day one, they invested in me.
What do you love most about working with customers?
Each customer and every interaction with each customer is different and presents its own challenges. And I love challenges!
With so many personalities across so many industries, I love finding out how to best approach new customers. Some are very relational and want a conversation, and some are all business and want promptness above all else. That’s the biggest and my favorite challenge, identifying exactly what personality type I’m working with and learning how to best serve them.
How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance?
I can be a workaholic, so it’s hard sometimes! But, Velocity looks out for us. Velocity has high expectations for productivity but our leadership also makes sure we’re taking care of ourselves. It can be a challenge to find that balance because if I have my phone, I can get some work done.
At the end of the day, our leadership team at Velocity encourages us to take time for ourselves. They encourage us to enjoy our time off and our weekends. During the workweek, they also do mental health check-ins to make sure we’re feeling good while working hard.
Our leadership team makes sure we have our best minds at work!
How have you adjusted to working from home? How do you stay focused?
I adjusted pretty easily actually! Velocity let me bring monitors home so my work reality didn’t have to change too much, it was very generous! I’ve carved out a dedicated office at home that’s off-limits from the kids and that allows me to focus.
The biggest challenge is that it’s inherently harder to stay away from the computer. You just continue working, so you have to be mindful of your own mental health and take the time you need.
What do you enjoy most about working for Velocity?
The atmosphere! The people are amazing. We don’t deal with much drama or any sort of communication issue very often. You always know what’s happening and you’re never surprised by anything. It’s all about over-communicating.
There aren’t many other places like this, we are treated just like family.
How would you pitch Velocity to someone considering joining the team?
Even if you haven’t heard of Velocity before, it’s worth taking the chance on! It’s a company that cares for you and one that will find the perfect place where you fit. They take care to make sure you achieve the greatest level of success and happiness.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
My family and I are all outdoors people! We have two kids and travel quite a bit, going to beaches and dog parks and things like that. We can’t wait to get back to that post-COVID!
